Folly Theater Poster – Concepts, Color & Texture Studies, and Typefaces.

Parisian Std

Parisian was designed by Morris Fuller Benton in 1928 for American Type Founders and is similar to Broadway, another M.F. Benton design from 1928. Parisian has sharp contrast between thick and thin strokes, and the lowercase letters have a small x-height and very tall ascenders. Since its release, Parisian’s lean and elegant Art Deco style has made it very popular for stationery printers and for other occasional and display applications.

Broadway

Broadway is a decorative typeface, perhaps the archetypal Art Deco typeface. The original face was designed by Morris Fuller Benton in 1927 for ATF as a capitals only display face. It had a long initial run of popularity, before being discontinued by ATF in 1954. It was re-discovered in the Cold Type Era and has ever since been used to evoke the feeling of the twenties and thirties.

    Concept 1
    I know this is “work in progress” however; the violin and Gretchen visually seem lost here. Perhaps, the violin could use some color to define what it is so the audience as it drives/walks by understands your message.

    Curious, the green you have selected – have you had a chance to do a study of how this poster would look in the display box at the Folly Theater? I’m afraid the green might get lost due to being too soft? What do you think?

    The texture on Gretchen’s outfit, it needs to grasp the form of the outfit better not look as it was cut and paste. Perhaps add some shade/shadow to it? i.e. the collar looks out of place here – the collars texture should exemplify a different form here. (let me know if you need help manipulating this in photoshop)

    Concept 2
    This looks really cool! I truly like how your composition is forming excellent harmony and unity here.

    Curious, are you truly attached to the colors here? Or can you tell me why you are employing this color palette in your concepts? This concept would definitely benefit from stronger contrast between the building forms, Gretchen’s shape, and the road/ground. I’m afraid your color selection is making your comp read muddy. Maybe employ some white, outline the buildings in black?

    Concept 3
    This concept is not as strong as your other 2 concepts. The skyline/buildings – is this of Kansas City?

    Color Studies
    I suggest, adding contrasting colors to your palette. I understand you selected Art Deco colors, but I’m not quite convinced they are playing well together yet. (check your email for suggestions)

    Type Studies
    Your type selection is good.

      Moving forward, I believe Concept 2 is your strongest. Do you agree or are you content with your direction on Concept 1? For Wednesday, please bring a print of the concept you are moving forward with. If you have time, feel free to develop your selected concept further for the WIP CRIT. Your composition can be printed on 8.5×11 or 11×17.

  • OK, Thanks! yeah I like 2 also. I just need to work a lot on the buildings…I just don’t want 3…lol

  • I prefer the aesthetic look of your first concept, but I think that it could easily be merged with your second concept. I think that the collaging technique your using is going somewhere, it just needs more refinement.

  • Thanks, Monica. I’m not going to lie, I’m feeling a bit overwhelmed at this point about turn around times here. I know what I can do but wonder if I’m able to with the time given. I am definatley going to go with the 2nd one. I feel the first one puts to much of a connect with her and the bass. And she’s a singer not a bass player. The second one has some hierarchy issues though. I think once I make some of the background smaller so the focus is on her, then it will be faster for me to render.
